Rock and Mineral Weekend at Nixon Park

This weekend is Rock and Mineral weekend at Nixon Park and it sounds like a lot of fun. The whole weekend will be dedicated to Rocks and Minerals with special exhibits, programs highlighting fossils, rocks and minerals and there will be a fossil pit to dig away in. (A little digger's dream!)

On Saturday the 16th, from 10-10:30am, will be story time for kids aged 4-7 about prospecting for gold, after the story the kids will have a chance to find their own gems.($5 per child/call 428-1961 to reserve your spot) At 11am kids 8 and up will have the chance to explode their own volcanoes as Parks Program Coordinator Jeri Jones explains the hows and wheres of earthquakes and volcanoes.

At 1:30pm there will be a Rail Trail Geology Bike Ride, departing from the Railroad Parking Area (no fee but call to register 428-1961) and at 2pm there will be another program for the 8 and up crowd called Exploring Minerals, taking a hands-on look at collecting and their importance.
